Real Estate: Surviving the Gravitron One Closing at a Time

Working in real estate feels a lot like riding the Gravitron.

One minute, you’re spinning around, laughing with your friends, feeling like you have it all together. The next minute, you’re plastered against the wall, questioning every life decision you have ever made… and then suddenly, the floor drops out from under you.

That is real estate.

I truly love what I do. I love seeing someone’s face when they walk into the one. I love helping people who once said, “I’ll never be able to buy a home,” walk away with keys in their hands. I love walking through a seller’s home and hearing the memories made there—the babies brought home, the birthdays celebrated, the holidays spent around the table—and learning why it is time for their next chapter.

If I could write a book about all the people I have met through real estate, I probably could. From working in a 55+ community to selling half-million-dollar homes, every person has a story, and I genuinely love getting to be a small part of it.

Some days, everything is smooth sailing. Everyone responds to emails, inspections go well, lenders are happy, and everyone makes it to the closing table without a scratch.

Then there are the other days.

The days when you are back on the Gravitron, bracing for impact because the appraisal came in low, the inspection report is 87 pages long, the buyer wants a new roof, the seller is offended, the lender needs “just one more document,” and someone’s dog ate the survey.

Real estate is so much more than showing houses, handing over keys, and collecting checks. Some days, we are therapists, gardeners, cleaners, pool experts, pressure-washing coordinators, referees, counselors, negotiators, professional problem-solvers, and part-time miracle workers.

We wear a lot of hats—and most of them are not cute.

TV makes real estate look like we unlock a door, point at a kitchen island, and magically collect a check. In reality, we may work on a deal for months only to have it fall apart right before closing. But we pick ourselves up, dust off our clients, regroup, and start again.

Because the check does not come until the closing does.

So the next time you think, “I could do that,” sit down and talk with a Realtor. Learn what happens behind the scenes to help you buy or sell your home.

We love what we do. We love people. And even when the Gravitron is spinning full speed, we will keep holding on for our clients.
